Enrol on your course for the MAT paper in autumn 2024
MAT: notes & hints, web tutorials
- This course is for students taking the MAT paper in autumn 2024.
- Why to prepare for MAT? Oxford candidates who do well in the test and at the interview receive conditional Oxford offers with only standard A-levels.
- What other UK universities ask for MAT? Now Imperial College London has started to select maths candidates on the basis of their MAT scores.
- How long? 9 weekly topics plus 3 marked mocks, you could start at any time.
- Each topic has 10 short problems with general hints (Problems 1.1-1.10 on Topic 1), 3 long problems with general and step-by-step hints (Problems 1.11-1.13 on Topic 1).
- All topics are designed from easiest to hardest according to our past experience. However you may always choose to study the topics in your own preferred order.
- Notes (about 9-11 pages on each topic) form a large book of 143 pages, namely topic 1 on pages 1-9, solution to homework 1 on p. 10-11, topic 2 from p. 12 etc.
- All MAT papers since 2006 are covered: MAT 2006-2010 are in the notes, MAT 2011-2012 are in 20 web tutorials with gradual hints, MAT 2013-2019 are mocks (practice exams).
- Every web tutorial is split into 4 on-line quizzes that you can try many times, you get step-by-step solutions and reviews of tips and common mistakes.
- What's the point if examiners' solutions to past MAT questions are online? The mistake in original Q3(v) MAT 2011 has been explained in this blog post. You may prefer a rigorous training with step-by-step hints and without gaps.

Marking homework and mock problems
- Homework: one long problem on each topic with our general hints and step-by-step hints given in the notes, e.g. first homework is Problem 1.13.
- In the extended version of the course, you may also submit your solution to any 3 problems, e.g. your full homework on Topic 1 can be Problems 1.11-1.13.
- No deadlines: submit homework when you are ready, any late homework is marked. Any long problem is marked as a mini-mock with full mark 15 as in a real MAT paper.
- Each of mock exams has 10 short questions (4 marks each) and 6 long problems (15 marks each, choose only 4 for your degree programme) from MAT 2014-2016.
- All short and long training problems in Topics 1-9 are similar to (not identical, and often harder than) MAT 2006-2010 and also two specimen MAT papers.
- The successful Oxford candidates gained 80-95% on average for all homework. Even top students sometimes receive only 60% in one homework for unjustified steps. The highest average score in the challenging MAT courses across all years is 95%.
- You get next notes together with feedback on your previous homework, hence you choose your own pace of work and may complete the course in 6 weeks.
